JAS /Japan Agriculture Standard (Japan)

JAS LAW changed in 2005 and Bioagricert has just obtained the new accreditation.

Agricultural products, feeds, processed food and livestock can be JAS certified (excluding honey and alcoholic drinks).

Please read the following instruction to know BSC_JAS certification procedure

JAS CERTIFICATION - ITER

1) First of all the Company must send an initial application called “Request of JAS certification”. By signing this form, the Company:

· Agrees to pay the fee for the compulsory JAS training course[1] that must be attended by the Product Process Manager (responsible for the production process) and the Product Grading Manager (responsible for the conformity of the whole process from the beginning to final labelling).[2]

· Indicates the type of Company and product to certify.

2) Once BAC receives the request of JAS certification, it sends to the Company the real application depending on the type of products that must be certified (Master JAS_01 for agricultural products and feeds; 02 for processors and 03 for livestock). [In case the Company is not under Bioagricert control for other certification schemes, it must also send the Notification]. In Master JAS 01_02_03 the Company must indicate the name of 2 people:

· Production Process Manager

· Product Grading Manager

3) The Grading Manager must complete an internal inspection report called “Inspection Report for Grading” (Master JAS 04_05_06 depending of the type of farm) for each lot of product.[3]

4) By 30 June of every year, the Company must send to BAC an Annual Report (completing the form supplied by Japanese Ministry- Excel file) in which it must declares the quantities of JAS products produced in that year. Then BAC must send this Annual Report directly to the Japanese Ministry.

5) BAC Inspector must send both to BAC and the Company an Inspection Program at least one week before the inspection, indicating:

· Itinerary to the Company

· Mean of transport used to reach the Company

· Foreseen starting time of inspection

· Foreseen ending time of inspection

· Documents or other things that will be audited

[1] JAS training course can be attended at Bioagricert seats. BAC inspectors can give the course directly at the Company. In any case the course must be completed before the certification is issued.

[2] In case of agricultural Companies, the 2 people can coincide while for processors there must be 2 different people.

[3] “Product lot” is the product produced in a field or processed in the same process. It does not mean the transaction or the sale lot. The Grading Manager must complete the Grading Report in order to declare that that lot of product is conforming to JAS standards. After he/she has made this declaration the product can be sold.
