GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

Regulation EC 628/2008 of 2 July 2008 amends Regulation EC 1898/2006 laying down detailed rules of implementation of Council Regulation EC 510/2006 on the protection of geographical indications and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs.
The symbols relating to protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications are currently identical in terms of shape, colour and design. Only the wording inside the symbols makes it possible to distinguish between them. In order to help consumers to distinguish between protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications different colours should therefore be used for the symbols relating to the two different indications. Two new different logos are now available, however the old logos may be used until 1 May 2010.

PROTECTED DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN (PDO)

PDO indicates the name of a Region, a determined territory or, in exceptional cases, a Country that distinguishes an agricoltural product typical of that region, territory or country and whose qualities are due exclusively to the geographical origin and whose processing and trasformation are carried out in that specific geographical area.
